There is another video series that I made for Groove 3 Called "effects plug-ins explained" that would probably help you- it is all about using EQ and Compression, as well as Reverb and delay. I don't want to give too many comments without checking it out in the studio but in all honesty listening on headphones I really don't think they are that bad at all and you could salvage them quite easily without much doing to them.
