I’d say you and your characters should know each other for at least a couple of weeks before any sort of romance ensues. But boy, do I wish I put more time into this because I didn’t realize it’d be an important thread throughout the series. I am a proud Pantser (still am) and really enjoy making things up as I go. If you don’t know your characters, if you barely know your plot, you’re going to have a romantic flop.īack when I was writing the first novel to my trilogy, I had no idea what I was doing. I’d like to say that I’m good at writing romance…Įven though I know absolutely nothing about romance (jesus, I’m a single, scaly alien who sits in her lair all day…) I do know a lot about character relations and observations. You know, it really depends… Some people love romance, some people hate it… Me personally, I enjoy a good romance… You know, a strong, cute one’s always nice… I do actually have a romantic subplot in all of my books, as of now… Because what is life without a little romance anyway? It’s a natural thing that shows up in most YA novels and since I write YA and hate being creative, I added one in in every single one of my projects. Or lastly, they could have a reaction like this: So people either have these three reactions when they think about romance: I’ve been avoiding the hell out of it, and only for one reason. People of Earth, I do this a lot, and so maybe I should create a separate segment for this particular thing, but anyway, I have another confession for you.
